Why Am I Not Getting Clients as a New Coach

You’ve done the work. You’ve spent months (maybe even years) getting certified, honing your craft, and finally clicking “publish” on your website. You’ve got the skills to change lives, and you’re ready to serve. But then… nothing. The inbox is empty. Your DMs are a ghost town.
You’re probably doing everything they told you to do. You’re posting on Instagram, you’ve updated your LinkedIn profile, and you’ve told your friends and family that you’re open for business. So why are you still staring at a zero-client roster?
If you’re a female veteran or a service-based business owner, this feeling is even more frustrating. You’re used to having a mission, a clear set of orders, and a team that gets things done. In the military, if you followed the protocol, you got the result. But the world of online coaching feels like the Wild West, and right now, your messaging strategy feels more like a shot in the dark than a precision strike.
Let’s have a real, no-BS conversation about why the clients aren’t coming and, more importantly, how we’re going to fix it.
Your Messaging Is Too Broad and Too Polite
Here is the first hard truth: If you are trying to talk to everyone, you are literally talking to no one.
I see this all the time with new coaches. You want to help “women feel better” or “help people find their purpose.” That sounds lovely, but it’s invisible. When you try to be a generalist, you become a commodity. And commodities are chosen based on price, not expertise.
To attract dream clients, you have to be willing to stop being so “polite” with your marketing. You have to plant a flag and say, “I help this specific person solve this specific, painful problem.”
Think back to your time in the service. When a mission was briefed, was it “Go out there and do some good things”? Absolutely not. It was “Secure Objective X by 0600 using these specific assets.” Your business needs that same level of tactical precision.
When your messaging is vague, your ideal client scrolls right past you because they don’t see themselves in your words. They don’t think, “Oh, she’s talking to me!” They think, “That’s a nice quote,” and keep moving. You need to dial in your strategic marketing so that your words hit like a targeted transmission.
The Veteran Humble Trap Is Killing Your Visibility
As a female veteran, you’ve been trained to be part of a team. You were taught that the mission comes first and that “I” is a bad word. You were likely told to keep your head down, do your job, and let the results speak for themselves.
In the coaching world, that mindset will keep you broke.
If you are waiting for people to “notice” how good you are without you telling them, you’re going to be waiting a long time. Your audience engagement depends entirely on your willingness to be seen. You aren’t “bragging” when you share your expertise; you are providing a map to someone who is currently lost in the woods.
If you aren’t getting clients, it’s often because you’re hiding behind your logo or a bunch of stock-looking graphics. People don’t hire “coaching programs.” They hire people. They hire leaders they trust. If you aren’t showing up as the face of your brand, you’re making it impossible for your dream clients to build a connection with you.
It’s time to stop being the “quiet professional” and start being the visible authority. Check out more on veteran-owned social media tactics to see how to bridge that gap.
You Are Selling the Plane Instead of the Destination
Imagine you’re booking a flight to a tropical island. Does the airline sell you on the engine specifications, the type of fuel used, and the 14-step safety check the pilot performs? No. They show you the white sand, the blue water, and the drink in your hand.
Most new coaches spend all their time selling “the plane.”
- “You get four 60-minute calls a month!”
- “We’ll use my proprietary 12-step framework!”
- “I offer voxer support between sessions!”
Your clients do not care about your sessions. They care about their transformation. They are in a place of pain, and they want to be in a place of peace, profit, or power.
If your content is focused on the logistics of coaching rather than the messaging strategy of the result, you will lose them every time. You need to paint the picture of the destination. What does their life look like after working with you? How does their business feel once that problem is solved?
When you shift your focus from “what I do” to “what you get,” your conversion rates will skyrocket.
You Are Relying on the Post and Pray Method
I’m going to be very direct with you here: Posting on social media is not a sales system.
You can have the most beautiful aesthetic on Instagram, but if you aren’t actively creating audience engagement, you’re just shouting into a void. New coaches often fall into the trap of “passive marketing.” You post a quote, you share a tip, and you wait for the “I want to hire you!” DMs to roll in.
That’s not a business plan; that’s a wish.
To get clients as a new coach, you have to prioritize conversations over content. One direct conversation is worth 100 “likes.” Are you reaching out to people? Are you asking questions? Are you inviting people into a Clarity Call?
In the military, we didn’t just set up a tent and hope the objective moved toward us. We went to the objective. You need to do the same in your business. Active outreach doesn’t have to be “salesy” or “gross.” It’s simply about being a human being who is looking for other human beings to help.
Your Energy Is Shouting Lack While Your Words Are Saying Abundance
People can smell desperation from a mile away. If you are showing up to sales calls or writing posts with the energy of “I really, really need this client to pay my mortgage,” you are going to repel people.
I know it’s hard when you’re new and the bank account isn’t where you want it to be. But your messaging strategy is only as strong as the conviction behind it. If you don’t truly believe you are the best person to solve their problem, they won’t believe it either.
This is where your veteran background is your greatest asset. You have stayed calm under pressure. You have led when things were falling apart. You have a level of resilience that most “civilian” entrepreneurs haven’t even tapped into yet. Lean into that. Show up with the quiet confidence of someone who knows exactly how to get the job done.
You Are Over-Complicating the Mission
Stop looking for the “magic” algorithm hack or the newest shiny tool. You don’t need a 20-page website. You don’t need a complex funnel with 50 moving parts.
What you need is a simple system that connects you with your dream clients.
You need to know:
- Exactly who you serve.
- Exactly what problem you solve.
- How to tell them about it in a way that makes them feel understood.
- How to ask them to take the next step.
That’s it. Most new coaches stay “busy” doing things that don’t actually move the needle because it feels safer than putting themselves out there and potentially getting a “no.” They spend hours on Canva instead of 15 minutes on a phone call.
If you aren’t making money, you aren’t running a business; you’re indulging in a very expensive hobby. It’s time to strip away the fluff and get back to the basics of business fundamentals.
Stop Thinking Like a Coach and Start Thinking Like a CEO
The reason you aren’t getting clients is rarely because you’re a “bad coach.” It’s because you haven’t yet stepped into the role of CEO. A coach focuses on the transformation; a CEO focuses on the systems that allow that transformation to happen for more people.
You have the discipline. You have the heart. Now you just need the structure.
If you’ve been trying to figure this out on your own and you’re tired of the “hope and pray” method, it’s time to get some back-up. You wouldn’t go into a high-stakes mission without a briefing and a plan: don’t try to build a six-figure business that way either.
Whether you need to refine your messaging strategy or build out a repeatable sales system, the answer isn’t “more content.” The answer is more clarity.
Stop guessing. Start building.
